Cookies & TeaOne of the most vivid memories I have of my mother, when I was young was the hoarding of gourmet cookies so that she could have one delicate cookie each day with a cup of coffee. I use the word hoard lovingly as she had no choice with six hungry youngsters forever searching for something to eat. Without hiding these away, they would have been lost to the small dirty mitts of six siblings. When there was extra money in our household, my mother would buy several boxes of the vanilla and chocolate cookies, one hundred to a box for us to share. But, it seems no matter how sparse the bankroll, she always had one small delicate package of the tea cookies for herself . And surprisingly, over the years, we learned to appreciate the importance of this small daily ritual. And as daughters often do, they repeat their mother's frailties and today,
I too hoard a box of different pastry like delicacies so that I may dip
them lovingly in my morning coffee. It is for this mother and daughter
sharing that I name this section of awomanswrites.com "Cookies & Tea" is for sharing short vignettes of lives as mother and daughter. While my own daughter, Beth; generously provides most of the material, periodically I will share the writings of other mothers. We have several women writers in our family and I welcome their mother daughter life events as well. |
